(Baseball StL) – Two Cardinal pitchers are making waves in the record books this week. Kevin Siegrist and Adam Wainwright have hurled their way into the annals of history on the backs of impressive streaks.
Wainwright’s win Tuesday made him 13-1 in his last 15 starts against the Astros. More impressive, his ERA was a paltry 1.43 over those last 15 games. Not since Roger Clemens savaged the Angels over a 15 game stretch in the early 90s has a pitcher won that many times against one team with an ERA below 1.50.
Clemens went 13-2 against the Angels from 1990 to 1995, and recorded a 1.33 ERA. The Astros are still good for something afterall.
The real gem of a record belongs to Keven Siegrist, however.
The 23-year-old is the first Cardinal player to not allow a run in his first 12 appearances since 1900. In his first 12 career innings of work, Siegrist has faced 41 batters, given up 2 hits, and struck out 17. This kid can’t even rent a car and 97.2 percent of all major league batters he’s faced haven’t gotten a hit off him.
Moreover, 40 percent of them are striking out. Most 23-year-olds are working their first job and fighting to get off the bottom rung. Siegrist is cruising through major league hitters like they’re tee-ballers.
While some normalization is expected- he is a rookie afterall- there’s no denying that he’s starting his career in spectacular fashion (he broke a 113-year-old record) .
As the Cardinals move into the next phase of their organization- one that will be fueled by young talent or bolstered by established names in exchange for prospects- Siegrist is undoubtedly a keystone member.
