CHICAGO (AP) -- A veteran corrections officer is dead after being struck by a hit-and-run driver outside Cook County Jail as she was about to start her shift.
Authorities say 38-year-old Nikkii Bostic-Jones of Plainfield was crossing the street late Wednesday when she was hit by a van.
Cook County Sheriff's Department spokesman Frank Bilecki says the impact pushed the officer into oncoming traffic and she was then struck by a second vehicle.
The van fled the scene, and Bostic-Jones later died at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Family members say Bostic-Jones was married and had a 6-year-old daughter.
