HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A Harris County mother has been charged with beating her 4-year-old son to death.
Vastie Coleman, 27, is charged with injury to a child with serious bodily injury.
Investigators say she beat little Kyron Barnes with a cord Sunday night at their home in the Villas of Pine Lake Apartments off Sam Houston Parkway.
Kyron was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. They tried to revive him, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Kyron had evidence of old injuries, according to CPS.
Neighbors said Coleman’s boyfriend also lived at the apartment.
Two other children, ages 6 and 8, were removed from the home and turned over to CPS. They are staying with a foster family. An emergency custody hearing will be held Tuesday to determine if they can be placed in the care of relatives.
Coleman is being held in the Harris County Jail without bond.
She is scheduled to be in court Tuesday.
”The kid didn’t deserve to be killed you wouldn’t think that would happen they seemed like nice people,” said Avian Ngene, a neighbor.
Robin Dawson, another neighbor, agreed and said she was shocked to hear the news.
“I figured there’d be a sign or two—there was nothing, it was always quiet. I never heard them kids getting a whooping,” she said. “I got a couple kids myself. They be out there talking to them and I sent my kids out there. They be all eating popsicles together. They popped fire crackers on the Fourth of July.”
