( -- We head into the thrilling part of the season...District and STATE tournaments.Class 1-2-3 have already wraped up districts and dive into STATE Sectional & Quarterfinals this week. First some quick thoughts on some of the District titles won this week.

Prepcasts has a full plate of District championship Games this week as well as STATE Sectional and Quarterfinal games. Check our schedule.

Class 3--

District 2

Boys-Top seeded Clearwater struggled with a determined St Pius with a 68-65 win. The Tigers outscored the Lancers 16-7 down the stretch to gain the title.

District 3

Girls--The only #5 seed to win the District title in Class 3 did it here. Carnahan(8-13) beat the host school-Herculaneum 48-45 to win the Championship. This was a wide-open district since all of the teams brought in sub .500 records.

...some Kentucky-Mizzou thoughts....Phil Pressey shot the lights "out" late in the game. He can't shoot it better. seemed to me that late in the game when Lawrence Bowers and Alex Oriakhi were no longer on the court, Pressey was told either to a) shoot each possession or b) he isn't comfortable sharing the ball with other inside players. The outside shooters were being guarded tightly so the drible-drive penetartion, kick back out wasn't there. you blame the Cardinals for "delaying" on Wainwright? Heck...let's see what his stuff looks like in mid-July or August before "reupping" for another five years. Maybe he came back too soon last year..don't know...but he didn't seem to have the same stuff to me last year. His numbers from 2010 to 2012 don't look favorable to me...his ERA went up from 2.42 to 3.94, his WHIP moved up from 1.051 to 1.248, hits/9 inn also went up from 7.3 to 8.9. I'm not saying don't sign him, I'm thinking that it's wiser to wait to see if this progression continues or if it's the numbers of someone who returned too soon.

District 4

Boys-Maplewood Richmond-Hts outlasted John Burroughs 55-41. This was a situation, one of many, that both teams were top ten teams but only one will advance. This one was still tight 34-31 MRH after 3 quarters but an early, quick scoring spree by the Blue Devils broke it open. To no one's surprise, Kahlid Hagens (MRH) led all scorers with 23. Hear replay. Prepcasts has the Maplewood-Madison game in the Sectionals. Some observers think that this game is the STATE title game!

Girls-The Cougars of Lutheran-St Charles put together a tremendous 4th quarter rally to upend the #1 seed, Principia 55-50. Trailing 43-32 after 3 quarters, the Cougars went on a 23-7 binge to take home the title. Lauren Orr led the Cougars with 24 points.

District 5

Boys-Here we saw the #4 seed. Lutheran North taking home all the marbles. Tumbling the #1 seed, N. Tech (as I predicted last week) 74-54, the Crusaders upended the Ritter Lions (which I did not predict) 69-58 in the Championship. North always plays a rugged regular season schedule that includes many class 4 and even Class 5 teams. So....their record may fool it's 17-11 (14-11 when District started) North now faces Christian O'Fallon in the Sectional. That game will be on Prepcasts.

Girls-Cardinal Ritter had a tough night, the Lions were upset by North Tech 54-51. Making the sting burn a bit more, the Golden Eagles were behind 39-35 after 3 quarters. In this one, the difference was at the line. The Golden Eagles shot 26 of 45 from the line. Maybe not a great percentage but 26 points from the charity stripe is HUGE>

....SLU Basketball may not be what CBS wants to highlight in their games since their aren't guys pounding their chests, jamming & hanging on the rim and making flashy plays but their defense is good at home and away, they share the ball with seemingly no interest in who scores the points, stay poised and win games.

District 7

Going right down to the wire, this was a great one. Top-seeded, Bowling Green(22-6) recaptured the lead 52-50 with a minute remaining only the see the Palmyra Panthers(23-5) score the last 4 points of the game as the Panthers win it 54-52. Bowling Green had beaten Palmyra twice this season and in the district championship game last year. It was Palmyra's first district title since 2005.

District 9

Boys-Basketball fans will be talking about this district and game for a long, long time. Loaded with 3 teams in the Top 10 of the STATE Rankings (Fatima #3, Cuba #4 and St James #9) with the fourth seed, Dixon bringing in 19 wins! The semifinal game was a REAL CLASSIC. St James won it in regulation 104-103 over Cuba(24-3).... that's right, regulation. Trailing most of the game, despite the return of valuable Jack Mueller who was still hobbled from his ankle injury, the Tigers took their first lead at the 3:30 mark of 4th quarter. Then, after St James had stretched the lead to 99-91 with just over a minute remaining, Cuba went on a 3-point tear. Kody Ettinger hit FOUR straight 3-pointers for the Wildcat to tie the game at 103-103 with 10 seconds left. Jake Ford hit 1 of 2 from the line and that was the difference. Each school broke school records for scoring in this NBA type score. The very next night, St James (24-4)fell to the #1 seed-Fatima(26-1) 65-37. The Comets hit their first 3 shots (all 3-pointers) and raced to a 34-10 lead with just over 3 minutes left in the first half. Hartville is up next for Fatima.

...DeSmet is playing outstanding basketball right now.

...For the third time this season, I'm saying that Incarnate Word will win Class 4 STATE title. They are loaded with talent, hard-working players, well prepared by Dan Rolfes and they've played a tough schedule to prepare them for the run.

...Dwight Howard is the epitome of what's wrong with the NBA....all about himself-- his points, his touches, his minutes. Look for the Lakers to wish him well as his contract expires this season.

District 10

Boys-Two outstanding semifinal games took place. The #4 seed, the Licking Wildcats edged the top seed LIberty -Mountain View 62-61 while Hartville (#2 seed) squeked by Alton 67-65. In the Final, The Eagles (22-4) won another nail-biter 53-50 to advance into the STATE tournament.

District 12

Boys-After dropping the District title for 3 straight years to Mt Vernon, the Seneca Indians went 3-ball crazy in the 4th quarter! The Indians hit 10 treys including the last 21 points (SEVEN shots) from the field to shock the fans and many across the STATE with a 51-47 Overtime championship victory! The #3 seed, Seneca took care of #2 Clever 54-43 in the semis.

District 13

Girls- This championship didn't have either of the top two seeds in the title game. Stockton(15-2-#4 seed) beat #3 seed, Lamar(14-13) 57-44 to take home the hardware.

btw...I picked 8 of the 16 boys district champions and 7 of the Girls Champs in last week's FLASH. Don't know if that's good or bad.
