Crucial week of practice for Blues

(HockeyStL) -- The Blues have seen it all from an excellent start to a “homestand from hell” in their first 18 games. The only thing the up-and-down Blues haven’t seen is a break.

That is until now. The team is in the midst of their longest break of the season, albeit four days in between games. There won’t be another break like this until the season is over so the Blues are making sure to use it for one thing.

“Practice. We need our tempo back up. We need to practice really fast and really hard for two or three days here -- at least two days,” Ken Hitchcock said.

“I told the players (Saturday), I don’t think we’ve got 12 hockey practices left until the end of the year. That’s not very many. So every time we’re on the ice together really counts. We’ve got to take advantage of this.”

Players were given the day off Sunday and would start to prepare for their next game, a chance to end a historic run of points in 19-straight games to start the season for the Blackhawks Thursday at home.

It might be the perfect time for the Blues after finding their home mojo in a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jackets Saturday. The team hadn’t been victorious at home since beating the Wild in overtime on January 27.

“It’d been a while it seemed,” David Perron said. “We got to carry this for our next game against Chicago, playing the best team in the league and we’ll have a lot of practice time this week to figure some things out and I think it’s going to be much-needed with the short season.”
