ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – MoDOT is making preparations for the second snow storm to hit the Midwest in less than a week.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is sending equipment and staff to central and northern Missouri as several inches of snow is predicted to arrive late Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service reports the heaviest band of snow will stretch from south of Kansas City to Kirksville, accumulating snow north of U.S. 54.

“MoDOT is prepared and will activate crews to plow and treat roads as soon as possible,” said Elizabeth Wright, MoDOT state maintenance engineer.

“Unfortunately, the combination of strong winds and heavy snowfall means whiteout conditions may occur. That makes travel extremely hazardous and makes clearing roads very difficult.”

Motorists in the western and northern parts of the state should plan ahead and alter their travel routes to avoid being caught in the storm.

The potential for high winds has drivers of trucks and tractor-trailers traveling on high alert during the heaviest snowfall.
