JUPITER, Fla. – Adam Wainwright seems like the obvious choice to start on Opening Day for the Cardinals April 1 in Arizona. And Mike Matheny has lined up his pitching rotation for that to happen.

Matheny confirmed Thursday that the veteran right-hander will make his spring debut on Monday at Roger Dean Stadium when the Cardinals host the Houston Astros.

And if Wainwright were to start every fifth day after that, he’d be lined up perfectly to start the first game of the 2013 regular season on April 1 against the Diamondbacks on regular rest.

Matheny wouldn’t confirm Wainwright as the Opening Day starter but when told by reporters that the math pointed towards him, Matheny didn’t do anything to deny it.

Everyone loves Adam Wainwright - but is it a good idea to give the 31-year-old just one year off Tommy John surgery a long term deal? Share your thoughts.

“You are welcome to make all the assumptions that you’d like,” Matheny said. “You guys have been doing your homework. Not a surprise.”

Wainwright went 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA in 32 starts last season, his first since missing the 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has one year remaining on his contract and has been talking with the Cardinals about a long term extension.

The 31-year-old Wainwright started the Cardinals home opener at Busch Stadium a season ago. He has one career Opening Day start in 2009.
