JUPITER, Fla. – New Cardinals infielder Ronny Cedeno figures to see
time at both second base and shortstop this spring and could even play
third base in a pinch. And that’s just fine with him.

Cedeno, signed to a one-year contract worth $1.15 million, figures to
serve as the primary backup and insurance option for Rafael Furcal at
shortstop but could work his way onto the field at second or even

“I’m going to be ready for any situation the manager needs,” Cedeno said.

Cedeno, 30, has played eight big league seasons for the Cubs,
Mariners, Pirates and Mets. The career .247 hitter was signed by the
Cardinals in late January as protection should an injury occur on the

Searching for his first playoff appearance since reaching the NLDS
with Chicago in 2008, Cedeno said he just hopes to help the club in
any way he can.

“It’s a good situation for me here,” Cedeno said. “I feel good. It
feels good. I am happy to be with this organization, a great
organization that hopes to make the playoffs and get to the World
Series and I hope we win it.”

Asked about being on a team with a realistic goal of reaching the
postseason, Cedeno said, “It’s been a while. I’m really happy to be
here. I’m really excited to be with a great organization like this.”

Cedeno said he will focus on second base in most drills this spring
because he’s much more familiar and comfortable at shortstop. The
Cardinals have an open competition for playing time at second base
with Matt Carpenter and Dan Descalso the two leaders.

The main goal this spring, Cedeno said, is to stay healthy. If that
happens, other things will fall into place.

“The big thing for me is I want to be healthy and that’s it,” Cedeno
said. “I’ve been around for a little bit and I can do a lot of things
for the team when I am healthy, offensively, defensively, wherever he
needs me.”
