Wife targeted in alleged murder plot kills self in southern Illinois

HARRISBURG, Illinois -- A prosecutor says the wife of a southern Illinois man accused of trying to hire someone to kill her has died from an apparent suicidal overdose.

Saline County State's Attorney Mike Henshaw tells the (Carbondale) Southern Illinois that 61-year-old Linda Young of Eldorado died this week at a hospital in Evansville, Ind.
Henshaw says the cause of her death is based on a coroner's report.

Young's husband, 61-year-old Roger Young, was charged earlier this month with solicitation of murder for hire. Prosecutors say the retired coal miner tried to pay someone $5,100 to kill his wife of nearly 40 years.

Young's preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday in Harrisburg. He's jailed on $1 million bond.

Young's attorney hasn't returned a message left Friday seeking comment.
