(KMOV.com) -- Missouri Governor Jay Nixon is expected to announce a plan to expand nuclear development in Missouri, which could create thousands of jobs.
Ed Smith, Safe Energy Director for the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, says that renewable energy could create 18,000 jobs throughout the state. The expansion could also meet 25 percent of the state's electrical needs.
Nixon plans to make the announcement during a press conference will with Ameren Missouri and Westinghouse Corporation. Westinghouse is currently in the process of cleaning up a radioactive waste site in Hematite, Missouri that's over a decade old.
