EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A ceremony is planned Saturday to dedicate a memorial to an Edwardsville soldier who was killed in Afghanistan.
The (Alton) Telegraph (http://bit.ly/J8RGnj ) reports that the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday for the "Ryan Garbs Gold Star Memorial Plaza," which is located in front of the Edwardsville Public Library.
Ryan Garbs was a 20-year-old Army Ranger when he was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Feb. 18, 2007.
Garbs graduated from Edwardsville High School in 2005 and enlisted in the military later that year. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
His parents, Jill and Doug Garbs of Edwardsville, began building the monument shortly after their son's death.
