ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – St. Louis City jails will receive extra money towards its budget in an effort to keep more gun-toting criminals off the streets.
A $2.5 million increase to the Department of Corrections budget was decided Wednesday.
The population in jails has increased by 500 inmates since judges started issuing higher bond amounts for suspects in crimes involving guns.
City officials tell News 4 more money is necessary to pay for more inmates’ food and health care in addition to extra staff to guard them.
The city will also add 42 jobs to the department.
