Brandon Phillips: Man of many words, but not worth booing anymore

(KMOV.com) -- More than 15 teams come to Busch Stadium every year. Some only stop by once, others make multiple trips. But over the last two seasons no team gets more recognition at Busch than the Cincinnati Reds.

Cardinals' fans always offer a nice round of applause for former Cardinals Scott Rolen and Ryan Ludwick but that does not compare to the boos that fill the air when Reds' second baseman Brandon Phillips' name is called, comes up to bat, or gets involves in the game in anyway possible.

As a die hard Cardinals' fan and someone who attends almost every game, I do not understand why fans continue to boo Phillips. For those of you who do not know, in 2010 he said something along the lines of, "I hate the Cardinals. All they do is 'whine' and moan about everything, all of them, they're little 'whiners', all of 'em."

Sure, a little harsh but is it not time to stop this?  It's been two years now, let's let it go already. I get it, he bashed our team but are we not understanding what is really going on here?

First, Phillips has been quoted numerous times saying he loves to get booed, he thrives on it, it makes him feel good. If that is the case, then why are we still doing it? This is a guy that we as Cardinals' fans hate, yet we are doing the one thing that he likes. I am pretty sure not giving Phillips the attention that he is just begging for would just catch him off guard. As good a player Phillips is, I would rather have him off guard than on guard while playing the Cardinals.

Another reason is said best by Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.

"We know that they have a pretty good team, but we don't care. We're just going to play our game and have a good season," Molina said of the Cards-Reds rivalry.

He is exactly right. Who cares?  In 2010, the Reds won the Central Division, went into the playoff and were swept in three games by the Phillies. One of those games was a no-hitter. Now last year the Cards didn't win the Division but made the playoffs, unlike the Reds. We all know what the Cardinals went on to do.

Who cares what Phillips said, the Cardinals got the last laugh; they won the World Series.

Brandon Phillips loves all the attention we, as fans, give him so I think its time we stop making him feel good.  If we do that and we still feel the urge to boo when the Reds come back, here is what we can do. Boo Johnny Cueto.
