ST. LOUIS—A 21-year-old suspect has been charged after a St. Louis-area tow truck driver was killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident in north St. Louis Monday night.

Aaron Bogue was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and property damage. He remains in custody on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

Police said Bogue struck and killed 51-year-old David Bense Sr., who worked for AAA Auto Club, on Interstate 70 near West Florissant while he was putting down safety flares and assisting a stranded motorist.

Bense’s wife said he was on his last call of the night and was wearing a safety vest.

Authorities say Bogue sped away, but was stopped a short time later at Mallinckrodt and 14th Street. Authorities took him to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.

"I think it was cruel he hit him and kept going instead of stopping," said Charmelle Bense, Bense's sister. "I think that's the worst thing you can do to somebody is leave them knowing you hit someone."

Authorities said Bogue's toxicology test was done, but results would take several weeks.
