ST. LOUIS—A 21-year-old suspect is in custody after a St. Louis-area tow truck driver was killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident in north St. Louis Monday night.
Police said 51-year-old David Bense Sr., who worked for AAA Auto Club, was assisting a stranded motorist on I-70 near West Florissant Avenue when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle while putting down safety flares.
Bense’s wife said he was on his last call of the night and was wearing a safety vest.
Authorities say the suspect sped away but was stopped a short time later at Mallinckrodt and 14th Street. Authorities took the suspect to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
Earlier on Monday, a worker was injured only a couple of exits away from this accident.
