(KMOV.com) -- Metro officials report that trains will resume normal operation following an accident involving one of it's trains and a car.

According to reports, the accident happened at the 37th Street crossing around 4:45 a.m.

Officials said the train was traveling eastbound when it hit the car.  Nobody on the train was injured.  It is not clear if the driver suffered any injuries, but the vehicle suffered heavy damage.  According to reports, the passenger side of the car was totally caved in.

Investigators did say the accident was not likely weather-related, but they wouldn't elaborate further.

MetroLink riders experienced delays up to and over 30 minutes Monday morning while crews worked to clear the scene of the accident.

Rail service has been restored and customers should only experience minimal delays in service.

Metro officials released this statement:

MetroLink is resuming normal operations. The Blue Line and Red Line trains are returning to normal service but passengers will experience 10 to 15 delays while the trains transition back onto their regular schedules. Passengers had been transported by bus shuttles between the Emerson Park MetroLink Station and the Fairview Heights MetroLink Station after a car and MetroLink train collided at 37th Street in East St. Louis around 5 a.m. this morning. Police closed both the eastbound and westbound MetroLink tracks while they investigated the collision.
