Cards look ahead after 9-5 loss to Cubs

(BaseballStL) -- Looking ahead...

Saturday, Lance Lynn will make his fourth start of his Major League career.

Lynn looks to improve upon his first outing of 2012 where he picked up the win going 6 2/3rds against the Brewers.  The righty allowed just one run on two hits; he struck out a career high eight batters.

Meanwhile, today's attendance 46,882; second largest regular season crowd ever at Busch III.

Carpenter triple sparks 5th-inning rally

Filling in for the injured Lance Berkman, Matt Carpenter picked up his fourth and fifth RBI's of the season with a two-run triple.

The Redbirds struck five times in the fifth inning pulling within four, 9-5.

The rookie, Carpenter, was the Cardinals 2010 Minor League Player of the Year.  The left-handed hitting infielder led the Birds in hits in Spring Training with 20.

Cards avoid shutout

The Cardinals will not be shut out on opening day.  Jon Jay recorded his third RBI of the season.  9-1 Cubs.

Matt Holliday just gave one a ride to right, but it was caught on the warning track.  Holliday has two homeruns on the season.

David Freese's team leading 11th RBI of the season makes it 9-2 Chicago.

Adam Wainwright is always tough on himself after bad outings, not like he produces many, but it should be interesting to hear how he sums up his outing. (3 innings, 7 hits, 8 earned runs).

Busch Stadium quiet as Cubs bomb Cards

Going to need some coffee to keep me up through this game. Busch is extremely quiet, except for the occasional fan, who may or may not have been over-served, yelling at the Cubs.

Adam Wainwright is done for the day. Wainwright threw 58 total pitches, 37 for strikes. He lasted just three innings, gave up seven hits, eight earned runs, walked two, and struck out three.

Today's outing tied a career high in earned runs. In May of 2007 against the Dodgers the righty went just 2 2/3 innings. That was the first year he was a starter.

Wainwright getting shelled

In his first home start since September 2010, Adam Wainwright is getting shelled.  The right-hander has given up two home runs, a three-run shot, and just minutes ago, a grand slam.  8-0 Cubs in the third inning.

I haven't seen Waino throw a fastball faster than 91 miles per hour.  Chalk this one up to 'Friday the 13th?'

Brock has fun during pregame ceremonies

During the pregame ceremonies, all of the Cardinals Hall of Famers shook the players hands at home plate, but Lou Brock did not.  Instead the 'Base Burglar,' gave high fives out! It was great to see him having fun.

Cards get off to slow start

Not the start St. Louis wanted.  Adam Wainwright has done ‘ok’ against the Cubs in his career; 6-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 16 career starts.

Not sure why so many fans left. The game wasn’t delayed too long.  It’s opening day! But it is getting very chilly out there.

Carlos Beltran’s walk up song is, ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’ Unofficially, the last Cardinal to have that walk-up song was Mark McGwire.

Matt Carpenter just singled.  He said he doesn’t feel the pressure of filling the shoes of Lance Berkman until he returns from a strained left calf.
