Suspect slain in struggle with Missouri officer

BIRCH TREE, Mo. (AP) -- A south-central Missouri man is dead after what the Highway Patrol says was a struggle with a police officer over a gun.

KOLR-TV reports ( ) reports the fatal shooting happened early Thursday near the Shannon County town of Birch Tree.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Marty Elmore says a Birch Tree police officer had gone to a house to pick up a man suspected of assault in Mountain View. Elmore says the two were in the officer's patrol car when they began struggling over a weapon.

The car ran off U.S. 60 and through a pair of fences. Elmore says the struggle continued and the officer fired a single shot, killing the suspect.

The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Ronald David Andrews, of Mountain View. The Highway Patrol is investigating.
