ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Police have identified the body of a swimmer recovered in the Meramec River on Thursday.

Authorities said 21-year-old Philip Schwalm was swimming with a mask and swim fins on when he went missing about 4:00 p.m. in Castlewood State Park in St. Louis County.

According to police, four friends from Kirkwood went to the beach around 2 p.m. Officials said Schwalm went swimming and the friends did not realize he was missing until about two hours later.

The friends reportedly searched for Schwalm for about an hour before calling police.

Authorities believe alcohol and the low temperature in the water played a role in his drowning.

Police said fisherman spotted Schwalm swimming at some point. That’s where authorities began their search.

Metro West divers and K-9 units were deployed to the scene and searched for Schwalm for nearly two hours before his body was found around 7:30 p.m.
