Fleeing vehicle hits police cruiser, Metro East building

(KMOV.com) -- Suspects in a stolen vehicle fled from police, rammed a police cruiser and crashed into a building before coming to a stop in East St. Louis overnight.

Police said they got a report of a carjacking in Madison, Illinois around 11:20 Wednesday night.  Around 12:21 Thursday morning, officers with the WAVE (Working Against Violent Elements) task force spotted the stolen vehicle in East St. Louis and attempted to make a stop.  The driver did not pull over, but sped away instead.  Officers gave chase.
During the chase, authorities report, the stolen vehicle rammed an East St. Louis police cruiser.  After hitting the police cruiser, the driver of the stolen vehicle lost control and hit a building at 39th and State Street.
Police discovered five people were in the vehicle and added that some of the suspects tried to run.  All were captured and taken into custody.
A female inside the vehicle was taken to an area hospital after suffering minor injuries during the chase.  She was later released by authorities.  Four other men were arrested, but two were released a short time later.
The investigation is still ongoing and authorities have not determined if shots were fired.  Officials report that guns were involved, but it is not clear if the guns were used during the chase or during the carjacking.
The carjacking and chase drew a large police presence.  Federal officers, officers with the Illinois State Police and Madison County Sheriff's office worked together to capture the suspects.
