88 Ticketed in Kansas City effort to enforce seatbelt law

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) — Kansas City police say they ticketed 88 young people during an aggressive enforcement campaign geared toward making teenagers wear seat belts.

The police department worked with other law enforcement agencies across the state during a two-week effort in late March targeting young drivers.

Police say only 67 percent of Missouri teenagers wear seatbelts when driving or riding in a vehicle, and that eight out of every 10 teens killed in traffic crashes aren't buckled up.

Kansas City officers worked 45 hours around area high schools looking for drivers who were not wearing seatbelts while committing other violations.

Officers conducted 88 traffic violation stops, issuing 55 citations for speeding, 33 for seat belt violations and 38 for other various violations.
