ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Workers were busy cleaning in downtown St. Louis Tuesday after tests showed asbestos on the walls of two buildings near the site of last week’s steam pipe break.

Officials said the underground steam pipe was coated with asbestos that apparently scattered when steam shot a couple hundred feet into the air near 11th and Convention on April 5.

Crews were working to clean the north wall of Lucas Lofts and the south wall of the Globe Building after tests Monday night showed small amounts of asbestos.

As of Tuesday, no traces of asbestos were found on the wall of the Lucas Lofts and tests on Wednesday will determine if asbestos remains on the walls of the Globe Building.

City officials hope to have all streets opened near the Convention Center by the end of the week.
