ALTON, Il. (KMOV) – A proposal is currently in the works to allow speed cameras in Madison and St. Clair counties.
Senator Antonio Munoz, from Chicago, generated the idea to give Metro East mayors the chance to add the speed cameras. Senator Munoz was unable to be reached for comment on the issue.
The bill allows for speed cameras in several counties upstate in addition to Madison and St. Clair counties.
Several Metro East mayors that News 4 spoke with seemed open to the idea of the speed cameras which have come with considerable resistance from drivers.
Illinois State Police already uses portable speed cameras in work zones on the highway. In Missouri, St. Ann has a speed camera in front of a school which is something the mayor of Fairview Heights favors as well.
