(BaseballStL) – If Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo thought the Cards would be easier without #5 … he was wrong, wrong, wrong.
Gallardo only lasted three and two-third innings after giving up six runs on seven hits, including four home runs in Opening Day at Miller Park.
Gallardo gave up solo shots to Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday. Beltran and Holliday went back to back on consecutive pitches in the third which was followed by a walk to Lance Berkman which was followed by a monster two-run blast by David Freese.
An RBI single by Freese in the fourth and Gallardo was lifted and replaced by Marco Estrada.
Gallardo threw 89 pitches, 45 for strikes (44 balls) … he hits the shower with an ERA of 14.7.
Cardinals starter Jamie Garcia was a little shaky at the start, giving up two runs on two hits to the first three batters in the first inning.
