(BaseballStL) -- Mike Matheny knows how important Peter Bourjos is to the team, but the center fielder is still looking for his first hit as a Cardinal.
Matheny believes the 27-year-old is putting too much pressure on himself.
“He’s hit some balls hard and hadn’t had much luck,” Matheny said, “[He] had some good plays made against him.”
In 2011, Bourjos hit 11 triples and stole 22 bases with a .271 average and the Cardinals want to capitalize on his speed. But with just 13 at bats in 2014, Bourjos has struck out 6 times and only walked once. It’s hard to use his speed if he can’t get to first base.
“He’s a lot like Matt Carpenter,” said Matheny, “where he’s probably more likely to over work now than anything else. We just need him to trust himself, trust where he fits into this club.”
