(KMOV) – A bill collector for two medical offices allegedly devised an identity theft scheme to transfer patients’ money into his own account.

According to Chesterfield Police Captain Steven Lewis, the bill collector was funneling thousands of dollars into his own account.

Court records indicate the culprit was Eric Benson. Benson allegedly took credit card information from patients and set up an account with Square. He is accused of then naming the billing something similar to the medical organization at which he was working, making it difficult for his victims to notice.

Victims were patients at The Orthopedic Center in Chesterfield and MRI Partners of Chesterfield. According to police, a patient noticed the charges and started asking questions.

According to police, once Benson learned he had been flagged, he cleaned out his desk, never returned to work, and stole over $11,000. An additional $7,500 had been issued through Square, but once Square learned about what was happening, it voided the charges.

"One of the things we tell people is that even if you believe it to be legitimate, you have to check your statements on a monthly basis," Beson said.
