(KMOV) – Police in St. Peters are warning people to be aware of scammers claiming to be contractors fixing storm damage to homes.
Officers tell News 4 that scammers often target the elderly because they tend to be more trusting and may have disposable income.
During his visit to University City on Thursday, Governor Nixon echoed the warning by advising residents to be careful when picking a contractor.
St. Peters police advise people to ask contractors for references and check their rating with the Better Business Bureau before hiring them to do any work.
Police also warn resident to beware of “ruse” burglars who may pose as city workers and try to lure residents out of their home and get inside of it.
