(BaseballStL) -- There might be a thing or two that Mike Matheny has to worry about when it comes to the upcoming season for the Cardinals.

His ace, Adam Wainwright, is most definitely not of them. Wainwright went five shutout innings in his final spring training tune-up today against the Nationals.

That gives him more than 15 straight scoreless frames to end Grapefruit League play. "It was a good way to end (spring training)," Wainwright said. "I'm very comfortable working both sides of the plate with several different pitches. I just feel good out there."

The ace gave up just one hit, walked none and struck out six. Last time out, Wainwright blanked these same Nationals for eight innings here in Jupiter. But that time Washington brought very few starters. There was no Bryce Harper, no Jayson Werth.

This time those guys all were in the lineup.

"It doesn't matter," Wainwright insisted. "It just adds some credibility to your outings when you face some big names but I felt very comfortable with the way I threw last time and the way I pitched today."

Wainwright says he's going to enjoy the end to his spring training tonight, he completes camp with a 1.59 ERA, before starting his scouting of the Reds tomorrow. Opening Day is just five days away in Cincinnati.
