JUPITER, Fla. -- The Cardinals announced this morning they have optioned three players to the minors. Among them is left-handed pitcher Sam Freeman, who was in the running for the final spot in the big league bullpen.
Freeman had solid numbers in Grapefruit League play, 2.84 ERA in 6.1 innings, but walked four. His Achilles heel has been commanding his fastball consistently.
The move leaves Jorge Rondon, Keith Butler and possibly Scott McGregor as possibilities for the bullpen.
Also optioned to the minors: OF Joey Butler (AAA) and SS Aledmys Diaz (AA). The Cuban infielder went 3-5 in two games with the Cardinals and showed terrific bat control.
