Police in East St. Louis to crack down on speeding

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – Police in East St. Louis will be using a different type of camera to crack down on speeding.

Officers will be using a handheld laser equipped with a camera to take a picture of the speeding driver. The officer will then seek approval for a ticket from a supervisor. Once approved, the ticket will be mailed to the car owner.

Anyone caught speeding on camera could face a $100 fine, and will have 30 days to pay it off or face late fees. Such a ticket counts as a civil violation and will not be reported to insurance companies or to the state.

Officials said they are using the cameras because traffic deaths are on the rise in Illinois. According to authorities, 48 percent of those fatalities are due to speeding.
