CHICAGO (AP) — The attorney for a man whose lawsuit resulted in a Illinois Supreme Court decision to allow new hearings for those convicted of murder while juveniles says there's evidence her client is rehabilitated and should be released from prison.

Addolfo Davis is serving a sentence of life without parole for a crime he committed when he was a Chicago eighth grader. His attorney, Patricia Soung, says the high court ruling means he could get a hearing to show he deserves a shorter sentence.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that similar sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional. The state high court ruled Thursday that the U.S. Supreme Court ruling can be applied retroactively.

Cook County prosecutors haven't said if they'll appeal Thursday's decision to the Supreme Court.
