(BaseballStL) -- One of the topics getting a lot of attention that Cardinals manage Mike Matheny cannot understand why is who's going to hit second in his batting order this year. Carlos Beltran did it so well for the last couple seasons, offering a lethal display of power before getting to the middle of the order in Matt Holliday and Allen Craig.
This season there's no obvious candidate. In a perfect world, Kolten Wong would hit lead off with his base stealing ability thus pushing Matt Carpenter down to the number two spot.
Until Matheny deems Wong ready for such an assignment newly acquired shortstop Jhonny Peralta may man that spot in the order.
Today, however, Molina gets a turn. But Matheny says don't read too much into that decision.
"We're going to continue to change (that spot) depending on the day and depending on who's available," Mike Matheny said. "(Molina's) not a guy we're going to stretch out really long. This will be his third day in a row. That plays as much into it as anything else, getting (Molina) in here so we can get him out."
Molina does not strike out a lot and has terrific bat control so he's a possible candidate to hit second. But the Gold Glove winner's lack of speed could lead to double plays that ruin rallies.
Expect this to be a rotating spot all year long until Matheny finds a good fit.
