ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) –Authorities have identified a man who was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop near the Mississippi River Thursday evening.

The suspect was identified as 32-year-old Jason Noroian of Des Peres.

Police say Port Authority officials reported two suspicious vehicles along the flood wall on Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard around 6 p.m. After they were stopped, officers learned that an occupant of one of the vehicles had a warrant out for his arrest.

The officer eventually pulled the car over on Leonor K. Sullivan near Biddle Street.

The officer approached the vehicle and asked the driver to step out. The officer said the driver was reluctant. As the vehicle door opened, he allegedly reached for the officer’s gun and got it out of the holster.

The men struggled and the officer tried to shoot, but the gun misfired. When the man reached again for the gun, the officer fired again, hitting the man in the side.

He was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The occupant of the second vehicle, a 32-year-old woman, was arrested for narcotics possession.

“Trying to take the officer’s weapon it’s a very dangerous situation,” said St. Louis Police Capt. Michael Sack, “When someone goes from an officer’s weapon, it immediately escalates into a lethal force encounter.”

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said the officer acted in self-defense. The officer is 28 years old and has been on the force for two years.

The officer involved was put on administrative leave pending a full investigation of the incident.
