Cross dressing bandit strikes Columbia, Il. bank

COLUMBIA, Il. ( -- Columbia police said they are investigating a two separate bank robberies that could be connected.

The first bank robbery took place last week in Town and Country, Mo. and the other happen Monday in Columbia, Il.

Columbia Police Chief Joe Edwards said he can think of at least three recent cases, involving the possibility of a female, wearing a wig and a lot of makeup trying to disguise her identity, including the Monday’s bank robbery.

Police said Monday the suspect entered the Commerce Bank in Columbia Centre and handed the teller a note demanding money and indicated the suspect had a gun.

Edwards said the suspect, who he thinks is female, was in and out of the bank in a minute-and a-half and left through the grocery store next door.

He said the physical descriptions of the two bank robbery suspects are all similar. Edwards said not only does he thinks the suspects are connected, but now they are crossing state lines.

“ It's our hope, that with these pictures, with the other pictures that you can view online, of the other  bank robbery suspects, if a family member or close friend takes a really close look at this individual,” said Edwards, “because in my opinion there are some distinct facial features."

Authorities track all current suspects through Bandit Tracker.

Chief Edwards said he plans to meet with St. Louis County Police Tuesday to discuss the strikingly similar cases.
