ALTON, Ill. (KMOV) – Police say a man caught a suspect attempting to break into an elderly neighboring’s home Monday morning in Alton.

Police say the man was taking out his dog when he noticed a subject at the rear window of his neighbor’s home in the 3500 block of Castelli Drive.

The neighbor knew the victim lived alone, so he decided to investigate.

Police say as he got closer to the house, he noticed a man, later identified as 28-year-old Joseph Randle, attempting to remove the screen from a rear window.

Authorities said as the neighbor approached Randle, he quickly fled the scene on foot.

Authorities said the neighbor’s girlfriend was in the process of calling police and the neighbor began to chase the suspect.

Randle was eventually caught a short time later.

A fight ensued as the neighbor struggled to get a hold on Randle. During the commotion, another neighbor came out and helped to detain Randle until officers arrived on scene.

Upon further investigation by police, Randle was found carrying a backpack containing pry tools, bolt cutters, a wrench and other items.

Randle was taken into custody and charged with attempted residential burglary. Authorities discovered Randle had two outstanding warrants on his record.

No injuries were reported.
