DES PERES (KMOV.com) – Some people are calling for a doctor at Mercy Hospital to be fired after claiming she violated a patient’s confidentiality on Facebook.
Dr. Amy Dunbar, an OB/GYN, wrote a post on Facebook about a patient who showed up late for an appointment. The post read “May I show up late for her delivery?” The words garnered a lot of angry comments from those who felt she violated the patient’s privacy.
Mercy posted a response to the angry comments on its “Mom’s To Be” Facebook page, saying Dunbar’s words were inappropriate. The hospital says it is reviewing the comments to see if they violate privacy rules.
The post does not reveal specific patient information, but does discuss some personal patient history.
On Monday, the hospital released a statement regarding the incident.
“Mercy values the dignity and privacy of all our patients and we are very sorry that this incident occurred. While our privacy compliance staff has confirmed that this physician’s comments did not represent a breach of privacy laws, they were inappropriate and not in line with our values of respect and dignity,” the statement read.
Regarding punishment, Mercy said its physician leadership has spoken to Dunbar.
“Mercy holds its physicians and other co-workers to high standards in ensuring the protection of patient information. We cannot comment on specific disciplinary actions, but we will use this as an opportunity to reinforce our standards through additional education of our physicians and co-workers, including appropriate use of social media.”
