(KMOV) -- Part of Interstate 55 is closing down tonight for bridge demolition.
The strectch of I-55 between Reavis Barracks Road and Bayless Avenue will be closed in both directions from 7:00 p.m. Friday until 6:00 a.m. Monday.
Crews are tearing down and rebuilding the side-by-side bridges where Union Road crosses the interstate in south St. Louis County.
Drivers can take the following detours. Those going southbound can take Weber Road to Gravois to Mackenzie then to the Reavis Barracks entrance ramp. Drivers heading northbound can take Reavis Barracks to Lemay Ferry Road to the Bayless Avenue entrance ramp.
MoDot and its contractor, Fred Weber, will implode the bridge tonight. MoDot says the Union bridges were built in the 1960s and their condition has deteriorated. MoDot also says the bridges don’t provide enough clearance for some trucks and that they have sustained damage over the years. The bridges will be rebuilt to add an extra nine inches to meet federal requirements.
