Connect With...Spotlight Of The Week: Safe Connections

The Safe Connections Young Professionals group formed in January 2010, but the agency we support has been a vital part of the region for more than 30 years. Since 1976, Safe Connections has provided help and hope to survivors of relationship violence and sexual assault. What began as a crisis phone line has grown into an agency offering integrated services to thousands of women. Safe Connections’ crisis counseling and therapy clients are women and girls who have been physically and emotionally abused in their private relationships, who have been raped, and who are adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. In 1988, recognizing that breaking the cycle of violence must include reaching adolescents, a violence prevention curriculum was introduced in schools across the metropolitan area. Since then, more than 100,000 teenagers have learned how to have healthy, violence-free relationships.

All too often, domestic violence and sexual assault are “taboo” subjects, despite the fact that abuse impacts our neighbors, sisters, daughters and friends. The Safe Connections Young Professionals group works to raise awareness among the 21-to-40 demographic through special events and initiatives. One of our key goals is to bring the issue of abuse out of the shadows, so that more people can receive the help they need. Our mission is a serious one, but our group is a lot of fun. Our kick-off event at Pi in the Central West End had a great turnout, and we’re looking forward to our next event: an evening at 33 Wine Bar in Lafayette Square on April 12. We’re also actively planning a performing-arts event and a trivia night.
The Safe Connections Young Professionals come from a variety of backgrounds and careers, and we look forward to having new members join us! Our events are open to the public and are posted on our Facebook page (!/pages/Saint-Louis-MO/Safe-Connections/78552217908?ref=ts) and on Safe Connections’ web site ( For more information, contact Safe Connections Young Professionals board chair Brooke Foster at
