St. Louis police: Stolen car crashes into tree, 1 person killed

(KMOV) -- One person is dead and three others are hospitalized after a car crash in north St. Louis. It happened Tuesday evening on Switzer near Park. That's near the Jennings city limits.

Authorities say four people were in a stolen van when the teenage driver ran through a stop light, smashed into a fire hydrant and then crashed into a tree.

An adult passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead on the scene.

The teen driver walked out of the car on his own, but the two other adults were trapped inside the van and had to be rescued. All three were taken to an area hospital. Two of them are listed in stable condition, the other is in critical condition.

Police deny that they were chasing the vehicle. They say they were monitoring the van because it was stolen. Investigators say they trailed the van and despite keeping their distance, the suspects took off and tried to get away.
