LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (KMOV) - The umpires here at Champion Stadium cancelled the Cardinals-Braves game earlier this afternoon due to torrential downpour.
After playing through the rain for an inning and a half, officials finally called a delay after a wet ball slipped out of the hand of Braves' pitcher Jesse Chavez, almost hitting Albert Pujols in the face.
Brad Penny was scheduled to start the game for the Cardinals, but was scratched before gametime because of the fear he would not get his full workload in before the rain started. P.J. Walters instead started in his place to make his first appearance for the Cardinals of the spring (although it won't count, obviously).
Penny will now start tomorrow back in Jupiter against his former team the Boston Red Sox to in a make-up game of the originally scheduled March 12 rain-out. Kyle Lohse, who was supposed to start against the Red Sox, will start in Kissimmee tomorrow to play the Houston Astros.
