(KMOV) – A two-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after being struck in the face by a stray bullet.

The shooting happened in the 1700 block of 2nd Street in Madison, Illinois around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Madison police say the two-year-old Joshua Martin was sitting on his grandfather's lap when a bullet entered through a window and struck the child in the face.

Investigators believe the bullet was fired from two blocks away in a drive-by shooting, missing the intended target striking Joshua. The vehicle is described as a black Chrysler 300 or Dodge Magnum. The shooter is described as a black male. Police say they do have persons of interest in the case.

The child was alert when police arrived. He was taken to a local hospital. He is listed in stable condition. His grandmother told News 4 that doctors are keeping him sedated. He hasn't awakened since the shooting.

Police said the bullet went in below his left eye and is lodged behind his right eye and docs are trying to figure out how best to treat him.
