BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- An East Baton Rouge Parish jury has convicted a 32-year-old St. Louis man of beating his girlfriend's 2-year-old son to death.
Jurors deliberated about an hour Sunday before convicting Dacarius Holliday of first-degree murder of Darrian Coon.
They will return to state District Judge Wilson Fields' court on Tuesday to decide whether he gets life in prison or death by lethal injection.
Defense attorney said Holliday was reckless and negligent, but he never meant to kill the toddler.
Prosecutor Dana Cummings said the boy's many injuries -- including a lacerated liver and kidney and 75 bruises -- show brutal, deliberate beating.
