Two sisters dead following accident in Granite City, Ill.

(KMOV) - Two sisters are dead following a two-car accident at the intersection of Illinois Route 3 and Missouri Ave. in Granite City, Ill. on Friday.

Around 4:30 p.m., a vehicle traveling north on Illinois Route 3 made a left turn into the entrance of Lowe's Home Improvement store at Missouri Avenue, and pulled into the path of an SUV traveling southbound on Illinois Route 3.

The Granite City Police Department reports that 54-year-old Deniece English of St. Louis, was transported to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, where she was later pronounced dead. The other passenger, 43-year-old Verna Smallwood, was transported to a St. Louis area hospital in serious condition. She died on Saturday from injuries sustained from the accident.

The drivers of both vehicles were treated for injuries and released.

The case remains under investigation, and the names of the drivers will not be released until further investigation is completed.
