(KMOV)-- The Missouri Department of Transportation re-opened one lane of westbound Interstate 70 at the Blanchette Bridge.
MoDOT closed a third lane on Sunday after closing two far left lanes of westbound Interstate 70 on the Blanchette Bridge on Friday evening for an emergency repair. The third lane has re-opened, but the original two lanes will remain closed. The two remaining lanes are expected to be open by the Monday evening rush.
A MoDOT spokesperson said crews are making repairs to a bridge expansion joint. One joint plate failed Friday afternoon and the affected traffic lanes were shut down. About 70,000 cars travel over the bridge every day making it the busiest bridge in the state. Motorists are advised to use Route 370 or Route 364 (Page Ave. extension) as alternate routes.
"I want to stress that the bridge is safe to travel on," said MoDOT St. Louis District Engineer Ed Hassinger in a news release. "We are advising motorists to avoid this area if they can during this emergency repair..."
