Pull up your pants! Local educators launch campaign encouraging self-respect

(KMOV) -- On Thursday, students at the Fresh Start Academy are getting a lesson in pulling up their pants.

It’s part of a program started by the Universal African People's Organization and based on the popular “Pants on the Ground” song.

The organization is trying to teach self respect to students at the school, telling them that by pulling up your pants, you're helping to pull up the community.

Here's a look at the campaign's action plan:

(1) Do not be a litter bug. Do not throw trash in our community.

(2) Eat more fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Eat less fast food, turn off the television and exercise the mind and body.

(3) Know in detail at least 10 freedom fighters like Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, ect.

(4) Read a book written by a Black author.

(5) Know all the continents/countries of the world, especially Africa.

(6) Know your important elected officials ( Governor, Congressman, Mayor, State Senator and State Representative, Alderman etc.)

(7) Support as many Black businesses as you can with your money.

(8) Be polite and respectful to everyone, especially seniors and elders.
