Overall crime reduced, but murders up in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The total number of crimes reported in St. Louis last month reached an apparent low for February, but the number of murders is up so far this year.

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said Tuesday that 1,787 crimes in all categories were reported last month, and that he couldn't find another year with such a low number.

But Isom also noted that St. Louis has had 23 homicides this year, compared with 14 at the same time a year ago.

Isom credits the drop in all other types of crimes to strategic changes he's made since becoming chief in October 2008.

The department faces cuts in equipment, services and personnel -- including officers -- to make up a $5 million revenue shortfall in the coming fiscal year.
