(KMOV) - All residents and firefighters are safe after a two-alarm fire in south St. Louis Monday night. The fire broke out in the basement of a four-family flat around 9:30 p.m. on Monday at 2141 Russell Ave.
Fire crews rescued an elderly woman and a man in separate units. The woman was bed-ridden and would not have been able to escape on her own.
Both were taken to an area hospital in stable condition.
One firefighter was trapped inside the building after running low on air and was separated from his partner in the building. The firefighter never ran out of air, and was rescued by other firefighters.
Crews say the fire started in the basement then shot up through the walls and out the roof of the building.
There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
