(KMOV) -- A three-year-old girl is hospitalized after she was hit in the head by a stray bullet in Owensville, Missouri.
A friend of the girl's family told News 4 that the girl was visiting a friend when the incident occured. She was reportedly walking with that friend and her brother to see horses on Monday. While they were walking she was struck by a bullet. She was apparently holding her friend's hand as she fell to the ground.
When the girl was airlifted from the scene, the helicopter had to stop in Creve Coeur because fluid was filling the girl's lungs. They then went on to Children's Hospital. One doctor didn't give her much hope but another said if they could contain the swelling of the brain, the girls has a chance. The bullet is lodged against her brain stem. She has been on a ventilator.
News 4 is told that the girl was shot during someone's target practice.
