Drunk motorist hits trick-or-treaters, police say

GRAFTON - A 29-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being struck by an alleged drunk driver during the weekend as he took his nephew trick-or-treating.

Scott A. Groppel, 41, of Eldred, is facing aggravated driving under the influence charges after he allegedly hit Justin E. Simpson and his 3-year-old nephew at 6:54 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of Illinois Route 100 and Cedar Street, Jersey County Sheriff Mark Kallal said.

Kallal said Simpson was treated at the scene for serious injuries by Jersey County Ambulance and then airlifted by ARCH Air Medical Service Inc. to a St. Louis hospital.
