ALTON - Facing a mounting city deficit of $613,000 so far, Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst said Thursday that he plans a second round of layoffs, effective today.
"As of closing time Friday, all seasonal part-time workers in the Park and Public Works departments will be laid off," Hoechst said. "The seasonals are about done with their work. By union contract, we have to lay off seasonal workers and part-time workers before the (full-time) Teamsters" in those departments.
Besides those workers, three Teamsters in the Street Division and two City Hall workers - code inspector Mark Plunkett and personnel assistant Claudia Kane - will lose their jobs today.
